The Gazelle Skirt SWAP on January 31st!

The Gazelle Skirt is excited to announce its third SWAP event! On the morning of Saturday, January 31st, we will be hosting a clothing SWAP and proceeds will benefit the women’s prisons in Dakar and Rufisque.

Who’s invited?
All members of our Facebook Group (join here) and their guests.

Our guest of honor is Mme Ndeye Diouf who has volunteered in the prisons for nearly 15 years.

We have also invited our favorite vendors to join us that morning and bring some of their most popular items. More on these to come…

When and where?
The SWAP will be held in Pojnt E from 10am to 1pm on January 31st. For directions, email or send us a message on Facebook.

How does it work?
Donate women’s clothing items that you no longer want and swap them with others.

  • Clothing must  be in good condition, clean and folded.
  • Shoes, jewelry, handbags and other accessories in good condition may be swapped as well.
  • For each item you bring, you will receive one ticket.
  • All items ‘cost’ one ticket.
  • Any items remaining at the end of the day will be donated to inmates at the women’s prison.

Please note that t-shirts and underwear are not allowed in the SWAP, but if they are in good condition, we happily accept them as donations .

New this year: Due to the growth of this event, clothing must be dropped off at one of the three locations (Point E, Mermoz or Hann Maristes) before January 29th! When you arrive at the SWAP, your ticket will be ready and waiting so you can start shopping right away!

Wow. This sounds amazing. The entry fee is probably like 10,000cfa, right?

No, my friend. Special price for you, nice lady. 😉

Entry for the event is 1,500cfa and proceeds will go towards transporting the clothing to the women’s prisons.

My 15 fashion resolutions for 2015

Get back into shopping the fugg jaay market on Monday morning. Such great treasures!

Play more with bogolan mudcloth as an accent fabric in clothes and for the home.

Get regular hair trims at Mylen’s in Fenêtre Mermoz. (For my hair, a trim is only 8000cfa! Highlights on short hair are 11,000cfa. Can’t beat that!)

Find more wax-print options for boys’ clothes.

Buy a pair of great pumps that are just a bit out of my comfort zone. You know, the kind with an actual heel. 😉

Save on manicures (DIY!). Splurge on pedicures.

Have a wax-print pencil skirt made.

Clean out my closet for the SWAP on January 31st!

Make visiting Mme Anissé for eyebrow threading and sugar waxing more of a priority rather than just hoping to find time to go.

Buy a bogolan handbag from Fatou Jobe. Check!

Avoid the hassle and shop for gifts on WOLOVE Market.

Follow Dr. Bouksani’s recommendation for gentle exfoliating twice a week and a clay masque (love Chouette Mama brand!) once a week. If you need a dermatologist, Dr. Bouksani is great.

Find the women who were selling pagne tissé wallets and clutches at the DWG Bazaar. I love mine! My friends need some now.

Explain the importance of darts to tailors across Dakar.

Interview Soraya on her new line of Moringa-based beauty products.

What are your resolutions?

The BEST shopping news in Dakar: WOLOVE

I love to shop. I mean, I. Love. To. Shop. The recent and on-going Christmas Markets are like my dream come true and I hate that they aren’t popping up (get it?) all year long. But there is some really good news ahead…

WOLOVE Market has launched.

WOLOVE Market was born as an idea to create an online marketplace for local artisans to give them the opportunity to reach a broader audience and to give buyers the opportunity to buy special pieces while directly supporting the artisans who made them. (More artisans coming soon! But fans of Bapribap, My African Heart, Sweet Things and Paletuviers should click on over ASAP…)

Do you see what I see? "Wendy Rings" at 25,000cfa!

Do you see what I see? “Wendy Rings” at 25,000cfa!

WOLOVE Market introduces you to handpicked, one-of-a-kind, talented artisans and offer opportunities to buy from their collections at a great value. All the artisans featured in WOLOVE Market are selected on only of the basis of the quality of their products but also their vow to responsible production and their commitment to the communities they work in.

So you can shop Dakar’s best from your pjs and have it delivered to your door – and I am all about some shopping in pjs.

My friend Monica is the founder of WOLOVE Market. (But I’d still be gaga over it even if I didn’t know the founder.) After moving to Africa in 2014, she quickly fell in love with the high quality goods produced by the local artisans but overwhelmed at the sheer inefficiency and lack of transparency. Leveraging her background in business strategy and online marketplaces, she started WOLOVE with the hope of creating a solution for others like her…
