HLM, fabric for days, and Patricia

HLM = fabric heaven.

One of the wonderful things about living in Senegal is THE FABRIC! We have such a wide variety and a unique selection right at our finger tips.

The other day Khady asked if I wanted to go to HLM with her mom, who was in town visiting her new granddaughter, and Sarah, who was leaving Senegal for another West African country in a few days. We would be going with Patricia, a personal shopping guide who happens to be fluent in French, English, and Wolof. (Impressed? Me too.) I was excited to go with Patricia because she knows where to go, how much the different types of fabrics are, what to ask, and what to look for before making your purchase.

Patricia charges 5,000cfa per hour for a group of 3 (1,500 for every additional person), which worked out great for us, since we could split it three ways.

Not only was she helpful at the market, helping us barter for our fabric, and reminding us to check the fabric for imperfections before buying it, she also helped us know where to go!

I'm pretty sure we would have made a wrong turn by the sheep...

SO many choices.

I bought some bright green fabric with birds on it. Yay!

"I want that one, with the pink and purple designs. It will be cute for my new grandaughter."

This was the name of the fabric shop we went to. Again, we were glad Patricia knew where it was, because we probably couldn't have found it on our own.

Patricia took us to another warehouse-type-shop FULL of different kids of fabrics and such.

Of course we would have loved to have Khady come along too, but she was home taking care of her tiny newborn gazelle, Yvia. Congratulations, Khady!!

What a precious little baby!

If you’re interested in hiring Patricia for a fabric, souvenir, or marketplace adventure, call her at 77 631 74 37. She knows where to turn once you pass the sheep.
