Lorrie is a creative spirit to begin with, so I wasn’t really surprised when she showed up at my house the other day wearing something I’ve never seen before: a hat made out of the same fabric as her dress!
She lives in a village in the Casamance and the women her age all wear headwraps every day, all day. Lorrie wasn’t loving the way a headwrap looked on her (she says she thinks her small head gets swallowed up in all that fabric – I had to chuckle), so she had her tailor copy a hat that she had and liked and wore all the time, but in African wax fabric. I thought it was really the best of both worlds: her head is covered, making her culturally appropriate for her age, she’s wearing the ‘headwrap’ look, she blends in with the other ladies, the sun is off her face, and she is comfortable in a style she likes!
Creative idea, Lorrie, way to use your head. Haaaa! Pun intended.
